When you get sick, nothing could be worse than being sick. You’re tired and achy, your head could explode from the sinus pressure, and you’re probably supporting the entire tissue industry with the amount of nose blowing you’re doing.
So, for your happiness and the well-being of everyone around you, it’s better to avoid getting sick at all. Piece of cake, right?
If you have children, especially children under the age of five, or have a job that requires a lot of human contact, it’s more a question of when you’ll get sick, not if. And, as flu season is in full swing, the number of germs and sick people you come in contact with is fairly high.
Many doctors recommend getting the flu shot to avoid getting sick, but this is not an option that all agree with.
Whether you believe in vaccines or not, there are some easy ways to avoid germs. We have compiled a few of these tips to help you and your family stay healthy this flu season.
1. Wash, wash, wash. The easiest way to avoid germs is to wash and sanitize your hands as often as you can. Doctors recommend scrubbing at the back of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails to get at the germs. Keep scrubbing for about 20 seconds to get the best wash. If soap and water is unavailable, use an alcohol-based sanitizer to keep your hands clean.
2. Get enough sleep. Not only will sleep help with your energy levels, but it can also help your immune system. When your body is sleep deprived, it makes less T cells — white blood cells that help fight infection. So do your body a favor and turn in early.
3. Stay active. As we get closer to the holiday season, physical exercise takes a backseat to projects, work, cooking, parties, and holiday shopping. Don’t let a busy schedule or increasingly colder weather keep you from your exercise, though. Staying active will boost your immune system and help your body stay ready to fight colds and the flu.
4. Clean, clean, clean. Picking up sick germs is unavoidable, but you can keep them from spreading and infecting by keeping your home and workplace clean. Wipe down bathrooms and doorknobs to kill germs and try to keep any sickness contained, even if it means canceling a playdate or get together.
If you do fall prey to a cold or flu, remember to drink some chicken soup and take care of yourself. And, if your throat is sore and painful, use some Yippee Cayenne to soothe it.
